MacScan Available for Free Today
In honor of yesterday's Talk Like a Pirate Day, SecureMac is offering their $29.99 MacScan security software for free today, 20 September 2010 (through midnight, Pacific time). MacScan detects, isolates, and removes malware like keystroke loggers and Trojan horses, and also helps clean up Web tracking cookies. Though avoiding seedy Web sites and dubious software is the best prevention, if you're worried about what's running on your Mac, it wouldn't hurt to give MacScan a try.
Just a quick comment that although no one else seems to be having trouble with this, the in-app purchasing code didn't work for me, and I had to order on the SecureMac Web site, which worked perfectly.
I had no problem purchasing it, but I found that you get what you pay for. While it appears to find 'tracking cookies' (72 of them) and reports that it's deleted them, I've found that it only pretends to delete them. All the tracking cookies it located are still there when I scan a second time.
Arrrrgh!!
I couldn't face doing another scan, since it takes forever to do if you have a lot of files on your hard disk. Doing a full scan on my main Mac Pro, which has over 1.5 million files on it, took all day.
Personally, I think I'll stick to safe browsing behavior.
