Motorola Exits Mac Clone Market
The Mac OS clone market took one more step toward oblivion today as Motorola Inc. announced that it will stop developing and selling Mac OS compatible machines at the end of 1997. In a statement warning investors of lower-than-expected third quarter financial results, the company blamed weakness in China's pager market and difficulties arising from the failed Mac OS licensing negotiations, culminating in a one-time charge of $95 million to discontinue its clone business. Motorola said it will provide new and existing StarMax owners with one year of telephone support.
