Mac OS X Zip Expanding Utility
Firefox (and possibly other applications) may ask you what you want to do with .zip archives that you download from the Internet. If you want to expand them with Mac OS X (rather than StuffIt Expander), you may be unsure of which application actually does the job. You're looking for Archive Utility (in Leopard) or BOMArchiveHelper (in Tiger). In either case, the application is stored in Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services/. Don't move it from there, though, or you'll confuse matters.

| Synchronize Pro X Released
Qdea is now offering Synchronize Pro X 1.0, a Mac OS X-native version of its synchronization and backup utility (see "Tools We Use: Synchronize" in TidBITS 482). As its name suggests, Synchronize Pro X enables you to compare sets of files and update them to match. It can also be used to copy files from one volume to another, including the capability to copy your startup disk in order to create a bootable Mac OS X system. Additionally, it can perform unattended backups to local or network volumes, or over the Internet, including Apple's iDisks. Synchronize Pro X can be run in a demo mode on folders containing less than 10 MB of data; its more advanced features can be applied to folders with less than 1 MB of data. Registration removes these limitations and costs $100 (or $70 for users of the basic Synchronize program). If you've purchased Synchronize Pro within the last two years, the new version is a free upgrade. The installer is a 1.6 MB download.
