Adam's ranking was second only to Apple iCEO Steve Jobs - who claimed the top seat by a wide margin - but also well ahead of other Apple executives, influential developers and technical folks, plus industry luminaries like Adobe's John Warnock and Microsoft's Bill Gates. The survey, which marks the relaunch of the highly regarded MDJ, the Daily Journal for Serious Macintosh Users, compiled private responses from a large group of Macintosh insiders, development executives, programmers, journalists, and industry observers, who were each asked to name who they felt were the five most powerful and influential Macintosh people. MDJ compiled the responses, listing the top 25 vote-getters, honorable mentions, and figures mysteriously missing in action. When I spoke with Adam (who's still in New York after Macworld Expo) about the survey results, he said that it was an honor to be recognized in this way by prominent figures of the Macintosh community. Over the last ten years, we at TidBITS have strived to make friends rather than enemies, and to focus on the person behind the personal computer rather than doggedly pursuing technology for its own sake. It's tremendously rewarding when people in every part of the Macintosh community find that work useful and worthwhile.

TidBITS Publisher Ranks Third in MDJ Power 25 -- In the now-annual survey of industry insiders coordinated by Macintosh publication MDJ, TidBITS publisher Adam C. Engst once again placed in the top five most influential figures in the Macintosh industry. This year Adam claimed third place, coming in behind Apple CEO Steve Jobs (no surprise there!), and giving up last year's second place spot to Apple's head of software engineering, Avie Tevanian, the man most directly responsible for Mac OS X. Rounding out the top five were Microsoft chairman Bill Gates in fourth place and Apple's hardware design virtuoso, Jonathan Ive. Congratulations to Adam and the others recognized in the MDJ Power 25! Engst was once again rated #3 in the MDJ Power 25, an annual survey which attempts to assess who wields power and influence in the Macintosh community. TidBITS Publisher Adam Engst #4 in MDJ Power 25 -- The results of the annual MDJ Power 25 survey are out, and TidBITS publisher Adam Engst has maintained a spot in the top five for the fourth consecutive year - fourth place this time around. The MDJ Power 25 attempts to determine who truly wields power and influence in the Macintosh community by asking for the opinions of long-time industry insiders. For the second year in a row, Adam was the only member of the top five who is not an Apple employee. Apple CEO Steve Jobs was once again voted the most powerful person in the Mac industry (surprising no one), followed in second place by Apple's Chief Software Technology Officer Avie Tevanian and Apple Vice President of Software Engineering Bertrand Serlet in third place, with Vice President of Design Jonathan Ive in fifth. The reason for Adam's continued high ranking? The industry insiders consider TidBITS required reading, and they acknowledge Adam's continual efforts behind the scenes to make the Macintosh community a better place.

There's a trend in the voting toward assigning more power and influence to Apple employees (and primarily high ranking executives at that). In 2000 and 2001, 10 Apple employees made the list, 14 in 2002, and 16 in 2003. The spots they've taken have come at the expense of independent Macintosh developers (seven in 2000 and eight in 2001, but only three this year, if you count Dr. John E. Kelly of IBM, who makes the list only because he's in charge of the group that builds the PowerPC G5 chip). The numbers of writers, journalists, and publishers has dropped only slightly each year, starting at eight in 2000, dropping to seven in both 2001 and 2002, and six in 2003. One question is whether the trend reflects a concentration of power in Cupertino, which could impact the overall health of the Macintosh world, or if MDJ's choice of industry insiders (at least those who take the time to vote) has become skewed in some way toward Apple. There's also some potential confusion between power and influence: Apple employees wield great amounts of power (since almost anything they do affects Apple customers), but people like Adam, David Pogue of the New York Times (6th place), Ric Ford of MacInTouch (12th place), and Rick LePage of Mac Publishing (14th place) influence what we know, what we talk about, and the way we think. Adam Takes the Fifth! The findings of the annual MDJ Power 25 survey are out, and this year the industry insiders who participate in the polling placed TidBITS's publisher Adam Engst fifth in the list of people who wield the most influence and power in the Macintosh industry. This is Adam's fifth consecutive placement in the top five vote-getters, and Adam is still the only member of the top five who doesn't work for Apple Computer. As in years past, the MDJ Power 25 tends to favor Apple executives and employees: 14 of the 25 positions were awarded to Apple, with CEO Steve Jobs, Executive VP Tim Cook, Software Engineering VP Bertrand Serlet, and VP of industrial design Jonathan Ive filling the top four slots. However, the 2004 list was not without its surprises: Apple's de facto #2 man Tim Cook wasn't even ranked in 2002 or 2003, Wall Street Journal technology columnist Walt Mossberg climbed to a #7 ranking, and Macworld's editorial director Jason Snell sprang off the "honorable mention" list to a #11 placement. Also surprising: Avie Tevanian dropped to #10 (largely in favor of Bertrand Serlet), Apple's Phil Schiller didn't make the list this year, and the only third-party developers to earn slots were Microsoft (Bill Gates and MacBU Manager Roz Ho) and Allume's Jonathan Kahn.
